Video Demonstrations of Luna's Technologies and Products
Video Name |
Video Description |
Luna is developing an innovative deck covering system that provides a ship’s crew protection from fire and fragments and mitigates damage by containing fragments produced during a blast event. The blast mitigation deck coating is being developed to meet new, more stringent mechanical property requirements as well as standard floor coating specifications in direct comparison with existing qualified materials. In this video demonstration of blast testing, you can observe how a currently qualified coating system suffers large cracks and massive delamination of the coating system and produces high speed fragments. The Luna coating system bulges in response to the blast pressure, but does not rupture or eject material. |

Distributed Sensing / 3D Shape Sensing |
Luna is developing real-time feedback of the dynamic shape and position of structures.
|
Luna Innovations has developed and has patented non-halogenated fire retardant materials with applications in composites and coatings replacing toxic or environmentally unfriendly brominated flame retardants.
|
|
Luna is developing impact indicator coatings for fiber reinforced polymer composites used as structural components in military and commercial aircraft. The impact indicator coating will change color in response to an impact event capable of damaging the underlying composite allowing for rapid identification of potential structural integrity issues. Areas of damage highlighted by the coating can then be more closely inspected to determine needed repairs.

Luna is developing 'self-healing' coatings through the microencapsulation and resultant delivery of materials at a compromised site. When ruptured, the microcapsules release film formers, corrosion inhibitors, and passive indicators into the damaged zone to form a protective layer. These coatings will be capable of indicating areas of potential coating damage, as well as perform self-repair to mitigate corrosion of the underlying substrate. |

Ultrahydrophobic Coatings (Self-Cleaning) |
Luna Innovations is developing 'ultrahydrophobic' coatings and surface treatments. This technology produces a surface similar to naturally occurring hydrophobic surfaces such as the lotus leaf, resulting in a ‘self-cleaning’ effect that prevents water, dirt and unwanted chemical/biological moieties from adhering to the surface. Luna has demonstrated the applicability of these materials to metal, plastic, glass and textiles. |
