Luna Innovations' Federal Systems Team Overview

Luna Innovations has a broad base of enabling technologies that can be customized or combined to provide solutions to critical military systems. Innovative solutions are developed using a structured process that starts with creating a complete system requirements document from initial customer requirements and onsite evaluations, and ends with a formal verification that the designed system meets those requirements. Technology readiness levels from our research groups are constantly monitored to identify opportunities for system solutions. Once appropriate technologies are chosen, engineering design and development disciplines are utilized to make the solutions reality. As required, Luna applies the following expertise to federal system solutions:
- Electronic circuit design, including high-speed analog/digital/RF
- Software / embedded firmware development
- Mechanical design
- Advanced materials
- Optical component / system design
Examples of federal system solutions currently in development include:
Imaging Sensor Electronics
Many military imaging platforms suffer from high development and integration costs due to the customized nature of the associated electronics and the technologies chosen for communicating with other subsystems. Luna’s solutions bring commonality to these electronics, interfacing with a variety of imaging arrays while handling video/data compression, encryption, and multiplexing to a format that is easily processed and integrated into ground, airborne, or space-based platforms.

Secure Computing
Luna’s Amanuet™ secure computing platform provides hardware-facilitated software protection from advanced tamper techniques, reverse engineering, and unauthorized execution and distribution. The benefits of this protection can easily be implemented in existing systems without modification to existing circuitry.
Perimeter Detection
Leveraging Luna’s Distributed Sensing System (DSS)™ technology, perimeters around sensitive government installations can be monitored for security breaches with a single telecommunications-grade optical fiber. Whether the fiber is installed in the ground or integrated in a fence or building, multiple intrusions can be detected simultaneously using the same fiber with an unprecedented localization capability. Using a double-ended system, intrusions can be detected even after the cable has been cut.
Shape Sensing / Position Sensing
The challenge of determining the dynamic shape of long, flexible bodies with high-spatial resolution is present in applications including the aerospace platforms, static and towed sonar arrays, deployable structures (i.e., antennas and cable assemblies), ocean surveillance, and the tracking of search and rescue robots. By attaching an optical fiber to the flexible structure being measured, Luna’s Distributed Sensing System (DSS)™ can provide real-time feedback of the dynamic 3-D shape and position of the structure with a 1 cm spatial resolution.
